CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – With no school and a free day due to Veteran’s Day, Grande Sports World played host to the 2014 Barro’s Pizza Invitational last Tuesday. The Academy split up into fifteen teams for a tournament to determine who’d have bragging rights for the next year.

The fifteen teams were split into three groups of five, with each team in the group playing each other once. After the group stage, the top eight overall teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament for a series of single elimination games.

As the morning’s slate of games wore on, the field was eventually narrowed down to two teams. In the final, the number two overall seed Sereno faced off against the number three seed Zozo.

Sereno, made up of Tate Schmitt, Brooks Lennon, Danny Moreno, Josh Drack, Robby Orona and Luis “Wicho” Barraza, took the field against Zozo’s Danny Acosta, Alec Felix, Mathias Baboun, Erik “Gallo” Virgen, Alejandro Segura Parra, Kris Fourcand and Christian Herrera.

From the outset, Zozo dominated the final. “Gallo” scored a hat trick in four minutes to give Zozo a dominant 4-0 lead thanks to an added goal from Mathias Baboun. Tate Schmitt scored a late consolation goal for Sereno, but Zozo had done more than enough to secure victory in the 2014 Barro’s Pizza Invitational final.

After the games, the boys went to Barro’s Pizza to celebrate a fun day of competitive soccer and Zozo’s championship win.
