Soccer Recap: RSL-AZ U-17/18 fall to Portland, leave Southwest Division up for grabs

BEAVERTON, Ore. – With an opportunity to clinch first place in the USSDA Southwest Division, Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy U-17/18 lost to the Portland Timbers 4-2 at a rainy Timbers Training Facility.

Facing tough playing conditions on an artificial surface in heavy rain, each team lost a man due to getting a second yellow card. Portland was the team better able to take advantage of the reduced numbers on the field.

It was RSL-AZ that struck first, however, with Sebastian Saucedo scoring a beauty of an opener from an Eric Carbajal assist in the 20th minute. It took only ten minutes for Portland to equalize, though, with Foster Langsdorf netting the goal off his head from a free kick.

With five minutes left in the first half, Saucedo was brought down in the box for a penalty that Carbajal converted to take back the lead at 2-1 and go back into position to clinch the Southwest Division at half time.

It was not to be, however, as Portland dominated once the numbers were reduced. In the 50th minute, Benjamin White tied the game up at 2-2 off of a cross. One minute later, Saucedo was brought down for another penalty but Eric Carbajal wasn’t able to get the penalty kick on goal.

The Timbers took the lead in the 82nd minute from a penalty kick of their own and then sealed the 4-2 win in the 88th minute off a breakaway Samuel Werner goal.

Having played their last regular season game, Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy U-17/18 currently sit at second place in the USSDA Southwest Division table at 2.19 Pts/GP. LA Galaxy U-17/18 are currently in first, also with 2.19 Pts/GP but with a game in hand. If the Galaxy lose or draw at home against Strikers FC on Saturday, May 31, RSL-AZ U-17/18 will clinch first place in the Southwest Division.

Whether they finish in first or second in the Southwest Division, Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy U-17/18 will next be in action in the US Soccer Development Academy Playoffs from June 23-27 at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
