Real Salt Lake Arizona Academy Announcement

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

We are very pleased to announce that Real Salt Lake Arizona is continuing to make positive strides toward admittance into the US Soccer Development Academy for 2010. To prepare for the final piece of this process, RSLAZ will be conducting open and invitational training sessions beginning May 12 and ending with the final invitational session on May 23rd. This final session will be attended and evaluated by US Soccer technical representatives and youth national team scouts Rene Miramontes and Hugo Perez. This final evaluation is a follow-up to our very successful March 10 session/visit by US Soccer. These sessions will be open to birth years 92 (non-college bound), 93, 94 and the 95 age groups. Please review the calendar below for dates, times and locations for each session.

In addition to the evaluation session with US Soccer, Real Salt Lake AZ is using these open and invitational sessions to begin the selection process to find Arizona’s finest players interested in competing in the 2010 MLS/Sum Cup Championships July 24-28 in Houston, Texas. This event will be hosted in conjunction with this year’s Major League Soccer All-Star game versus Manchester United. The MLS/SUM Cup is a U17 competition for Major League Soccer Academy programs only, with the winner representing Major League Soccer and the United States in the World Club Championships in Madrid, Spain. Real Salt Lake will field one team made up of the top players from its programs in Utah, Arizona and Florida. This will be the 3rd summer that Arizona players will represent Real Salt Lake having won the event in 2008 and finishing 4th in 2009.

If you are interested in being considered for this program please contact us through one of the following channels:

We have attached additional information on RSLAZ, US Soccer Development Academy and Grande Sports World for you to review. We look forward to seeing you all out on the field very soon. Best of luck to all players still competing in the final weekend of State Cup!

AZcentral.com and The Arizona Republic Soccer Writer Jose Garcia interviews Greg Vanney

Friday, May 7th, 2010
Greg Vanney did some great things while representing Arizona as a professional soccer player.
Vanney retired about 18 months ago and now is giving back to the game he loves, helping develop Arizona’s youth players. The state’s prodigal soccer son runs a new soccer facility on a resort, Francisco Grande, in Casa Grande that the San Francisco Giants used as their first spring-training home.
The soccer facility has the potential of becoming a premier soccer spot with the services it provides. Three of Major Leagues Soccer’s teams trained and lived at the resort before this season started.
U.S. Soccer will inform Vanney after May 23rd if a youth team based in Casa Grande will compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s league this year. Vanney’s former L.A. Galaxy teammate Mike Munoz and former U.S. national team goalkeeper

Juergen Sommer will help coach the team that will represent Arizona and pro team Real Salt Lake.

RSL is the nearest MLS team to Arizona. Most of the players on the RSL youth team will be from Arizona.
“I think there is a lot of talent in the state,” Vanney said.
On Saturday Vanney, 35, will represent his alma mater, Tempe Marcos de Niza, where Vanney also coaches, again as a soccer player.
Marcos de Niza and Phoenix Brophy will replay their 1990 state title game that ended in a 0-0 tie. Brophy alum Brian Wendel organized the game and got Gatorade to promote the 7 p.m. game at Brophy.
The Marcos de Niza-Brophy rivalry produced a handful of college and professional players.
“It (Saturday’s game) is going to be fun,” Vanney said. “It’s a reunion, but as soon as the whistle blows and somebody gets fouled it’s going to turn into a game.”
